There's a moment most dog parents recognise only in hindsight.

Your dog used to bolt up the stairs ahead of you. Then one day you noticed they paused at the bottom. A mood thing, you figured. Maybe just tired.

Three months later, they won't even try.

Joint trouble in dogs builds quietly, over months, before it becomes obvious. By the time most Indian pet parents catch it, the window for easy intervention has already passed. Figuring out why that keeps happening, and what the early warning signs actually look like, is what sent us deep into joint health research before we made a joint supplement for Indian dogs. Here's what to watch for.

 

 

7 Signs Your Dog's Joints Are Struggling

1. Stair hesitation

Early

Stair hesitation is one of the clearest early signs of joint discomfort in dogs. Climbing stairs places significantly more load through the hips and knees than flat walking does. A dog that pauses at the bottom, takes stairs one at a time, or places each foot deliberately instead of scrambling is managing pain, not being stubborn. Watch the rear legs specifically. Hesitation going up points to hip or knee trouble. Reluctance going down often signals elbows or shoulders.

2. Stiffness after rest

Dogs with joint problems are often stiffest immediately after waking or after lying down for a long stretch. This start-up stiffness, better once moving, happens because joint fluid doesn't distribute evenly when a joint is inactive for a while. The stiffness may shake off within a few steps, which makes it easy to dismiss. That's exactly why it goes unnoticed for months.

3. Intermittent limping

Consistent limping is hard to miss. Intermittent limping is the dangerous one. A dog that favours one leg on Tuesday and seems fine on Wednesday is often compensating, offloading the painful joint onto others. Note which leg, how often, and whether it worsens after exercise or rest. A pattern emerges faster than you'd expect.

4. Mood and energy changes after walks

Pain changes personality. A dog that snaps when touched on the hips or back after exercise, or that's noticeably quieter after a walk that used to energise them, may be signalling discomfort. This is one of the most consistently underreported signs. Owners attribute it to heat, mood, or "just a phase" and don't connect it to what happened 20 minutes earlier on the walk.

5. Visible muscle loss around the hips or thighs

Late

When a dog protects a painful joint by using it less, the surrounding muscles atrophy. This shows up as a narrowing around the rear end or a visibly thinner upper leg on one side. By the time it's clearly visible, the underlying issue has usually been present for several months. It's one of the harder signs to catch unless you're actively looking, which is why it so often goes unnoticed until the joint problem is already advanced.

6. Reluctance to jump

Mid

A dog that used to leap onto the sofa and now waits to be lifted isn't being lazy. Jumping demands explosive load through the joints on both the push-off and the landing. Reluctance to jump onto furniture, into the car, or over a low obstacle often appears before limping or stiffness becomes consistent. If your dog loved the window seat and has quietly stopped going there, their joints are the most likely explanation.

7. Licking or chewing at a specific joint

Dogs manage localised discomfort by licking. Persistent attention to one spot, a hip, a knee, an elbow, that looks normal on the surface often points to inflammation in the joint underneath. It's different from generalised skin licking: the behaviour is targeted, repetitive, and returns to the same location. If the skin looks fine and the behaviour keeps returning, the joint underneath is where to look, and a vet examination is the right next step.

Most of these signs appear one at a time, subtle enough to explain away. That's why joint problems go unaddressed for as long as they do.

Why Indian Dogs Are More at Risk Than You Think

Three environmental factors increase joint risk for dogs in India specifically, and none of them get discussed enough.

Hard floors accelerate joint wear. Most Indian homes have marble, granite, or tile throughout. These surfaces provide no grip and no cushioning. Every landing from a jump, every sharp turn, every sprint to the door adds compressive and rotational stress to joints that have nothing to absorb it. Dogs in carpeted homes or with garden access get passive joint protection that Indian dogs almost entirely lack.

Heat and humidity worsen inflammation. Sustained heat increases the inflammatory response in joint tissue, a consistently documented pattern in veterinary research on canine joint disease. Dogs in Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, or Hyderabad live in this environment year-round, not seasonally. It can push joint issues earlier than a breed's standard timeline would suggest, and it's part of why anti-inflammatory ingredients became non-negotiable in Wellie's Hip & Joint formula, not optional extras.

Large breeds carry compounded risk. Labs, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Rottweilers are common breeds in Indian households and already carry elevated genetic predisposition to joint problems. Hard flooring and less outdoor movement than these breeds were bred for amplify that risk further. Diet often makes it worse: most commercial food doesn't include the micronutrients that actively support cartilage and connective tissue.

Detection comes late. Joint assessments aren't standard in most Indian vet checkups for dogs under five. Owners don't flag early signs as joint-related. Most dogs that develop significant mobility issues were showing signs 12 to 18 months earlier that nobody acted on. Combined with the environmental factors above, Indian dogs often show meaningful joint decline earlier than breed health guidelines, which are largely based on Western dogs in temperate conditions, would predict.

Step 1

Build a symptom log

Spend one week watching deliberately. Write down specific observations: which stair, which leg, what time of day, how long the stiffness lasted. "Seems a bit slow sometimes" is nearly useless in a vet consultation. "Hesitates at the bottom stair every morning, took three tries to stand after his afternoon nap on Wednesday, and lifted his left rear leg twice during Thursday's walk" is actionable.

While you're building the log, add this as a monthly habit: run both hands along your dog's hind legs from hip to knee and compare the two sides. Muscle atrophy from joint protection is nearly impossible to catch by eye in the early stages. You'll feel the difference before you see it.

Date every entry. Your phone's notes app is fine. A week of deliberate observation gives you more diagnostic information than months of vague concern.

Step 2

Get a proper vet assessment

Take your log to a vet and ask specifically about joint health. Don't wait for them to raise it. Request a range-of-motion examination for the hips and elbows. If X-rays are recommended, get them. Baseline imaging is useful for tracking change over time.

If you're considering supplementation, bring the ingredient list of whatever you're looking at. The key things to flag with your vet: glucosamine and chondroitin concentrations, whether MSM is included at a meaningful dose, and whether Green-Lipped Mussel is present in a form that's actually therapeutic rather than just listed on the label at trace levels.

Step 3

Reduce load at home

Environmental changes reduce the daily stress load on joints. Non-slip mats at stair landings and near food and water bowls. An orthopedic or memory foam bed, because joint tissue repairs during rest and a hard surface works against that. Raised bowls for medium and large dogs. A ramp or low step near the sofa and car if your dog is still jumping.

Step 4

Address the nutritional gap

Standard dog food doesn't deliver joint-specific nutrition at meaningful levels. That's not a flaw in the food; it's not designed to do that job. But cartilage needs glucosamine and chondroitin. Connective tissue needs collagen. Inflammation needs targeted management. Kibble, even good kibble, doesn't provide any of these at concentrations that move the needle.
